Winco Foods is planning to open the newest grocery store in Silverdale, WA at the old Sears location in Kitsap Mall. According to a recent county permit, WinCo Foods plans to renovate the 105,194-square-foot building, as well as the parking lot and landscaping. Preliminary plans and PDF renderings are found within the county permit page (link above).
Plans also include 2 additional (separate) buildings within the 10-acre lot, including “GC Coffee and other request for auto service/oil change facility,” according to a recent Kitsap Sun article (paid subscription required to access it).
Architectural drawings reference a fresh sushi/seafood counter and a pizza/sandwich restaurant, in addition to the service deli, meat, bakery, produce, bulk foods, and a variety of traditional grocery cases. The new Silverdale WinCo store will be located at the south end of Kitsap Mall, at 10315 Silverdale Way NW, Suite C, Silverdale, WA 98383.
GGD Oakdale, an affiliate of California-based real estate development company Rhino Investments, bought the Silverdale Sears property for $9.1 million in July of 2019. There were initial rumors of lease negotiations with Hobby Lobby (which is now going in the old Toys R Us building instead), Harbor Freight Tools, and Burlington Coat Factory, but now WinCo Foods will take over the entire building.
WinCo Foods offers an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (“ESOP”). Participating in the ESOP program means employees are part owners of the company and can benefit financially from the store’s success. Additionally, being employee-owned means WinCo Foods is owned by members of the local community. The company reduces operating expenses by purchasing directly from manufacturers and farmers; operating basic, no-frills stores; and not providing bagging service.
Construction bids have yet to be awarded, and site renovations will take some time. Currently, the nearest WinCo Foods is on Kitsap Way in Bremerton, WA, with other stores (shown below) located around Puget Sound.
